The Royal Wedding

I may be one of the few Americans who was not interested in England's royal wedding today. I don't get it. You are probably disappointed to know that!. It seems that the entire world was watching the wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton. News coverage began at 4 am this morning. Even the Weather Channel had reports about the London weather for the wedding.

Here is a short video of the ceremony. Were you interested in the wedding, or did you think it was a waste of time? Did you get up early to watch it? Will you be looking at the news tonight to catch what you might have missed from the earlier coverage? Or will you (like me) ignore the entire thing?

Twister Caught on Camera

Most of you know that I am a weather geek. I enjoy following the weather and in general find it very interesting.

Have you ever seen a tornado up close? Between the Suffolk tornado of three years ago and the events of Saturday, April 16 it seems that we have all experienced or been close to a tornado. Yesterday Chris England of The University of Alabama caught a twister on film. Here is that dramatic video.

What did you think of that video? Was it frightening? Would you have been too scared to have filmed it? Was Mr. Carter brave to film it or just foolhardy? Finally, do you want to see a twister up close and personal?

What's for Dinner?

In Kenya, the Dorobo tribe gets a lot of their food by "stealing" the freshly killed animal from the lions that killed it. Check out this video from the "Human Planet." Do you find yourself cheering for the tribesmen as they approach the lions or pulling for the lions? After all, the lions did the killing. Do you feel sorry for the animal that was killed? Who do you think would have a harder time adjusting to another culture? Would it be us adjusting to the Dorobo tribe culture, or the Dorobo tribe adjusting to our American culture?

Suicide Due to Cyberbullying

Two Minnesota Eighth graders (Hayley Fentress and Paige Moravetz) recently committed suicide. They were good friends and may have killed themselves as part of a suicide pact. Something that seems to be obvious is that they may have been bullied and possibly cyberbullied. Let's watch the news story and interview with their families.

After viewing the interview, do you believe that the suicide of Hayley and Paige was due to cyberbullying? Do you believe that they were bullied, whether it was cyber or not? Do you know of anyone who has been cyberbullied, and was anything done about it? Is cyberbullying a problem at WHS?

Meet Keenan Cahill. You have probably seen his lip synching videos on YouTube or TV. For a 16 year old, he has made many new fans and friends, including Katy Perry, 50 Cent, Jennifer Aniston and the San Francisco Giants baseball team. The interview with Keenan is interesting and shows several of his videos.

Have you seen any of his videos? Is he talented, or just annoying? Will you be interested in his videos a month from now?

DC Mayor Arrested!

Washington Mayor Vincent Gray and other top city officials were arrested on Capitol Hill on Monday during a protest of the budget deal House Republicans cut with President Barack Obama. The Mayor publicly chastised a rider in the budget that stops local taxpayer funds from paying for abortions in the District of Columbia. The Mayor also chastised a provision in the budget that allocates money for vouchers for low-income students to attend private schools. Capitol Police say they arrested 41 protesters for unlawful assembly, for “blocking passage” on Constitution Avenue near the Capitol. Protesters chanted “Free D.C.” and “We can’t take it no more.” Tensions have long run high between D.C. officials and congressional Republicans for years. The Republican Party has largely opposed the District’s effort to gain a full-voting member in the House. The district’s member of Congress, currently Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat, can vote only in committee.

Do you agree or disagree with the Mayor's stance on the abortion rider? Why? Do you agree or disagree with the Mayor's stance on providing vouchers for low-income students to attend private school? Why? Should D.C. have a full-voting member in the House? Why or why not? What do you think about the method the Mayor used to get his message across to the House, the Senate, and the President?

It's Friday!!!

If you've been anywhere around a computer or television, you've undoubtedly heard about the song “Friday,” performed by Rebecca Black, a 13-year-old 8th grade girl from California. Here's the story in a nutshell... Rebecca Black's parents paid $2,000 to vanity music label, ARK Music Factory, so Black could record a song in its studio, then shoot a video for that song and distribute the song and video. The $2,000 covered half or less of the production of the song and video; by paying, Black retained some of the rights of the song. Here's the music video...

"Friday" has gotten almost 73 million YouTube hits and tons of publicity, but mostly for being so bad. Rebecca Black finally responded to all the harsh criticism on Good Morning America. Watch the interview.

What's your opinion of the song and video? Does Rebecca Black deserve such negative criticism? Do you think Rebecca Black has talent? What do you think, will Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber sing the next tween hit song?
